Reflection 4—#murica: A Social Media Tour of the USA

NOTE: Those of you presenting at the Adobe digital media symposium this month are excused from both Reflection 3 and 4.

Social media sites offer users a unique look at life around this country. Additionally, hashtags, locations, and searches allow us to see Americans as they see themselves—or, at least, how they'd like to be seen. From Oregon hikes to summers in New England, a social media tour of the United States can be an illuminating look at American life. For this reflection, your will visit a state based upon the month of your birthday. To find posts, go onto a social media app of your choice (Instagram and TikTok are probably best), then search for your state's hashtags (e.g. #thebronx). In your analysis, consider the ways in which we live. How do we represent ourselves as Hawaiians or Texans or Oregonians? What we do for fun? How and where do we congregate? What differentiates us as Americans? And as a Californian, what stands out for you in these posts?
