Reflection 1: Unplugged—Trying a Social Media Detox
Why take a break from social media? What would be the challenges? And what would you hope to gain?
Increasingly, users are engaging in what is called a "social media detox"—and often, with encouraging results. The idea is simple: stay away from your social media platforms and instead, focus on other aspects of your life. You might spend more time with loved ones, focus more on school, work, or hobbies, or maybe just catch up on sleep. Wherever you choose to place your focus, the goal is to stay away from social media as much as possible.
Your first reflection, asks that you abstain from all non-essential social media platforms for a seven full days. Each day, write a log entry (≈70 words) detailing that day's your experience At the end, your reflection should consist of a seven-day log (≈500 words).
You should begin your fast on, or about, Fri 9.6.
In your logs, you might consider:
- What were your feelings about the detox before you began?
- How did the detox affect your mood?
- What did you do to fill the time you typically spend on social media?
- What did the detox teach you about the habits you have surrounding your social media use?
- What did you learn about your own habits surrounding social media?
- Proponents
of social media detoxes often tout the mental health benefits of a break.
Did you find your detox helped your own mental health? If so, how?
- Will you change any habits now that the detox is over?
- Did you miss your social media as much as you thought you would?
- If you failed your fast, where do you think went wrong?*
*Failing the detox, does not disqualify you from the assignment. Instead, be reflective on why you failed—and start again.
